How to Read a Paint TDS (Technical Data Sheet)
Every paint tin has a Technical Data Sheet. Most people ignore it. But the TDS tells you exactly how to get the best result; and avoiding it is why paint jobs fail.

What is a TDS?
A Technical Data Sheet is the manufacturer’s instruction manual for a specific product. It tells you: what it is, where to use it, how to apply it, how long it takes to dry, and what result to expect.
It’s not marketing; it’s engineering data.
The 6 Numbers That Matter
- Coverage / Spreading Rate
“10–12 sq.m per litre at 40 microns DFT”
This tells you how far one litre goes. Use it to calculate how much paint you actually need for your job and what the real cost per square metre is.
- Recommended Film Thickness
Usually given in microns (μm). This is the target thickness of the dried paint film.
- Apply too thin → poor protection, weak colour, early failure
- Apply too thick → sagging, cracking, slow drying, solvent trapping
If you’re serious about quality, measure this with a thickness gauge.
- Drying Times
Usually listed as:
- Surface dry (touch-safe, no dust sticking)
- Handle dry (can be carefully moved)
- Hard dry/full cure (maximum hardness achieved)
Plan your work around “handle dry”; that’s when you can actually move or recoat the component.
- Recoat Time
“Recoat after 6–8 hours, within 48 hours”
This is the window for applying the next coat. Too early = solvent trapping, lifting. Too late = poor adhesion (the surface “closes” and needs sanding).
- Mixing Ratio (for 2-pack systems)
“Mix 4 parts base: 1 part hardener by volume”
Get this wrong, and the paint won’t cure properly. It’ll stay soft, tacky, or peel. Always use measuring cups; “by eye” doesn’t work for 2K products.
Also note the pot life: how long you have to use the mixed paint before it hardens in the container (usually 3–4 hours).
- Surface Preparation
“Apply on clean, dry, sanded surface. Remove all rust, oil, and loose material.”
This section tells you what prep the product needs to perform correctly. Ignore it, and no amount of expensive paint will save you.
